The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a five-year prison sentence for a British national convicted of purchasing child prostitution and committing indecent acts against minors.
Michael Jones, 55, was found guilty by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court of having sex with an 11-year-old girl and molesting three others aged 7 to 9 after a joint investigation by municipal anti-trafficking police and anti-pedophile NGO Action Pour Les Enfants (APLE) led to his arrest in June 2014.
“The Phnom Penh court sentenced him to eight years, the Appeal Court sentenced him to five years and the Supreme Court upheld the sentence,” Supreme Court clerk Kim Thavro said on Thursday, adding that he did not know the reasoning behind the decision.
He said the verdict also included the confirmation of a 4 million riel (about $1,000) fine levied by the Appeal Court—$4,000 less than that imposed by the Phnom Penh court.
According to APLE, the decision also confirmed the deportation of Mr. Jones upon completion of his prison term.
