Keeping Kids Safe Online: APLE’s Practical Tips from the Online Safety Forum

In today’s digital world, keeping your kids safe online is more important than ever. At the 2nd Online Safety Forum 2025, APLE shared some straightforward advice for parents. Here’s what you need to know:

Use Parental Controls

Make sure you have parental controls set up on all devices your kids use. These controls help you manage which apps and websites they can access. Check these settings often to keep up with new apps and features.

Stay Involved and Communicate

Don’t rely solely on technology. Take an active role by monitoring what your kids do online. Talk to them about what they’re doing and set rules together. This builds trust and encourages them to come to you if something seems wrong.

Teach Online Safety Skills

Teach your kids how to stay safe online. This includes keeping personal details private, using tools to block or mute unwanted contacts, making strong passwords, and updating apps regularly.

Create a Family Tech Agreement

Set clear rules for using technology in your home. Decide together where, when, and how devices and apps can be used. This helps everyone know what’s expected and reduces arguments.

Be Aware of Bypass Tricks

Kids are clever and can sometimes find ways to get around controls, like using AirDrop or in-app browsers. Talk about these tricks so they know you’re aware and encourage them to use technology responsibly.

Use the Right Tools for Each Device

Make use of specific tools for different devices. For example, use router filters for the whole home network, Microsoft Family on PCs, Google Family Link for Androids, and Screen Time on Apple devices.

Check Out Online Guides

There are great resources like the eSafety Guide and Common Sense Media that can help you manage settings on social media and gaming consoles, including controlling chats and purchases.

Set Healthy Gaming Limits

Agree on gaming limits with your kids, like how many games they can play or for how long. Try to end gaming sessions positively by doing something fun together afterward.
