The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications hosts Online Safety Forum 2024

Phnom Penh, Cambodia – On July 30, 2024, Smart Axiata, Cambodia’s leading telecom provider, partnered with the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPTC) to host the “Online Safety Forum 2024” at Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh. This event highlighted the importance of online safety as Cambodia advances its digital society. The goal is to ensure a safer online environment for all Cambodians.

The forum, themed “Together for a Safer Internet,” gathered key stakeholders from diverse sectors. Participants included government bodies, digital technology companies, NGOs, experts, content creators, and students. The forum addressed current online risks and harms.

Ziad Shatara, CEO of Smart Axiata, emphasized the collaboration’s role in tackling internet safety. “We are honored to support MPTC in organizing this event,” he said. He highlighted the opportunities forums provide for learning about solutions to online risks. He envisions a future where everyone thrives in a digitally connected world.

The event also focused on protecting children by creating a safe online environment for their growth. A significant step was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Smart Axiata and Action Pour Les Enfants Cambodia (APLE). APLE is dedicated to protecting children from sexual exploitation and abuse.

The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications expressed its commitment to creating a safer digital landscape. “By collaborating with the private sector and civil society, we aim to strengthen our efforts,” said H.E Chun Vat, State Secretary of the Ministry. He emphasized promoting digital literacy and protecting citizens from online threats.

Seila Samleang, Executive Director of APLE Cambodia, stated, “As we sign this Memorandum of Understanding with Smart Axiata, we embrace the power of public-private partnerships to protect children online.” He highlighted the importance of combined strengths and resources in creating safer digital spaces.

Smart Axiata prioritizes customer safety and security in line with its ESG principles. In early 2024, the company implemented cybersecurity measures like the Next Generation Signaling Firewall (NGSF) and Intrusion Detection System (IDS). These measures safeguard its network and customer data. Smart Axiata is certified with ISO 27001:2013 for Information Security Management System. It adheres to the NIST cybersecurity framework, both crucial practices for cybersecurity. As part of its commitment to digital safety, Smart Axiata will continue introducing innovative services and products to protect customers.
