On November 20, 2024, a Phnom Penh court sentenced two Cambodian nationals for sexual offenses against minors. A 58-year-old male defendant received a 7-year prison sentence. Meanwhile, a female defendant was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. Both were convicted of sexual intercourse with minors and child prostitution-related charges. The court ordered them to pay 200,000,000 Riels (about 50,000 USD) in compensation to the two child victims.
The case was investigated following a report by APLE Cambodia to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection (AHTJP) police in January 2024. Investigations revealed that the female defendant, an aunt of the victims, facilitated multiple instances of abuse. These occurred between late 2023 and January 2024.
APLE’s victim support team provided immediate psychological support to the survivors. They continued to work with partner NGOs to ensure the children’s safety and access to necessary services.
