Shaping a Safer Digital Future: APLE’s Online Safety Workshop for Siem Reap Youth

In an initiative aimed at fortifying the digital resilience of the younger generation, APLE Cambodia, in partnership with the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Education, Youth and Sports and supported by Plan International Cambodia, conducted a crucial awareness session on “Understanding Child Safety Online.” Held on 29-30 January 2024 at Chamkarchek Secondary School in Srey Snom District, Siem Reap province, the event enlightened 204 participants, including 113 female students and teachers, about the nuances of navigating the online world safely.

Teacher Tha Kosal, who played a pivotal role in facilitating the event, emphasized its significance: “This event is so important because it has given good knowledge to students responding to our real society nowadays. They could protect themselves from online child sexual exploitation and abuse.” This reflection captures the essence of the initiative’s impact on empowering attendees with the knowledge to safeguard themselves against digital threats.

The workshop addressed key areas vital for ensuring online safety, including understanding online activities and behaviors, recognizing and mitigating online risks such as sexual exploitation, and mastering safety tips for the digital realm. Moreover, it underscored the importance of knowing how to seek help and report suspicious cases, thereby equipping children and educators with the tools to contribute to a safer online environment.

By bridging the gap between awareness and action, the “Understanding Child Safety Online” session stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for children and teachers in Siem Reap. It reflects a collective effort to educate and protect the most vulnerable from the complexities of the digital age, ensuring they possess the confidence and competence to navigate online spaces securely.
