Phnom Penh, on July 6, 2023 Cambodia, particularly the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPTC), along with the support of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children and UNICEF Cambodia, launches the Guidelines on Child Online Protection for the Digital Technology Industry, with over 150 participants from government ministries, UN agencies, development partners, civil society organizations, and industry representatives coming together.
The Child Online Protection Guidelines for the Digital Technology Industry are designed to empower industries within the sector to effectively address and prevent both existing and emerging risks associated with the use of technology, which is the initiative aimed at ensuring a safe and positive online experience for all children.
Through the Guidelines, industry members are encouraged to implement internal policies to safeguard children, prevent and respond to child sexual abuse material; establish clear internal guidelines to protect children online; provide protection measures, including tools to block inappropriate content as well as reporting mechanisms and access to assistance from relevant authorities and services; and ensure the confidentiality and privacy of data and information concerning children using the internet.
Mr. Seila Samleang, the Executive Director of APLE, who also participated in the launch, expressed great enthusiasm about the Guidelines. He believes that these guidelines offer an opportunity for various digital technology companies, such as social media platforms, internet service providers, mobile operators, content creators, to significantly improve the online safety of all children. By following these guidelines, these industry stakeholders can actively support children’s rights and maintain the highest ethical standards.
