Phnom Penh, a British teacher, 37 years old, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for indecently assaulting two underage girls. The Supreme Court in Phnom Penh delivered the verdict on May 4, 2022. The teacher was found guilty under the charge of “indecent assault” as defined in the Criminal Code of Cambodia. In addition to the prison sentence, he was also ordered to pay 10,000,000 riels (approximately $2,500 USD) in compensation to the two victims and fined 4 million riels (approximately $1,000 USD).
The trial took place on April 20, 2022, with the offender and his wife present, but the victims and the plaintiff were not in attendance. The case originated from a complaint made by the mother of the two girls, which led to the arrest of the accused. He was charged with indecent assault and detained pending further investigation.
The Siem Reap Court initially found him guilty on June 6, 2020, and imposed the same prison sentence, compensation, and fine. Dissatisfied with the verdict, the defendant appealed to the Appeal Court in Battambang province. The Appeal Court upheld the judgment of the Siem Reap Provincial Court in March 2021. Then, the offender continued to appeal to the Supreme Court.
