The Court of Appeal, on June 3, 2025, upheld the verdict against two Cambodian nationals convicted of sexual offenses against minors. The court confirmed the original sentences: a 58-year-old male defendant received a seven-year prison term, while the female defendant, an aunt of the victims, was sentenced to five years.
Both individuals were found guilty of serious charges, including sexual intercourse with minors and child prostitution. In addition to their prison sentences, they were ordered to pay a substantial total of 200,000,000 Riels (approximately USD 50,000) in compensation to the two child victims.
The appeal hearing, held on May 16, 2025, was attended by the child survivors, their legal representative, a social welfare officer, and an official from the Ministry of Women’s Affairs. The presence of these individuals underscores the importance of support for child survivors throughout the legal process.
A representative from APLE, who accompanied the children during the legal proceedings, emphasized the need for a child-friendly legal environment. “It’s crucial that the legal process prioritizes the best interests of the child in their pursuit of justice,” they stated.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges in combating child sexual exploitation and the necessity of implementing child-sensitive procedures in the judicial system. The court’s decision is a step forward in holding offenders accountable and ensuring that the rights and well-being of child victims are respected.
