Released German Pedophile Now Set to Be Deported

Convicted German child abuser Udo Sabiniewicz was rearrested in Phnom Penh on Monday after having his passport canceled for previous crimes in Germany and will be deported just weeks after his release from prison, police and the NGO that investigated his case said on Tuesday.

The former CEO of an animation studio was released on June 18 after serving a one-year sentence for indecent sexual acts with two boys, said Uk Heisela, chief of investigations at the Interior Ministry’s immigration department.

“After he was released from prison, the German Embassy canceled his passport because he had committed another offense in Germany,” he said. Khoem Vando, deputy director of field operations at anti-pedophile group APLE, which led the initial investigation, said the crimes in Germany were also believed to involve sexual acts against children.

Mr. Sabiniewicz’s sentence in March was criticized by APLE as being too light.

The NGO released a statement yesterday saying that the victims’ families welcomed Mr. Sabiniewicz’s impending deportation, as he posed a continued risk to children in Cambodia.

Major General Heisela said Mr. Sabiniewicz was being held at the immigration department in Phnom Penh, and that his deportation date had not been set.
