What Children Need for a Safer Internet

  • Our Insights
  • September 20, 2024

The internet is an essential part of children’s lives today, offering many great opportunities but also some risks. To make the internet safer for children, recent discussions with children have highlighted clear needs. Here’s what needs to be done:

Stronger Rules and Better Enforcement
Children need stronger laws and stricter enforcement by online platforms. Governments and tech companies must work together to create and enforce rules that protect young users from harm. This means having clear policies and taking firm action against those offending.

Improved Privacy Settings and Safe Spaces
Children are calling for better privacy settings and safe online spaces. Tech companies should create easy-to-use privacy controls that help young users protect their personal information and interact safely online.

Simpler Ways to Report Concerns
There is a significant demand for better ways to report issues. Current reporting systems often use automated responses, which are frustrating and ineffective. Children want stricter age checks and the ability to report harmful content to real people who can help, instead of bots.

Local Support and Hotlines
Some children feel isolated and are asking for local support services and hotlines. Local governments and community organizations need to provide easily accessible resources to help young users deal with online challenges safely.

Systemic Changes
There is a call for bigger changes, like stricter consequences for online bullies, better content moderation, and improved age and identity verification on social media. Tech companies and law enforcement must work together to make these changes happen.

Education on Digital Safety
Children believe that tech companies should provide education and information on staying safe online. Since these companies create the platforms, they should also teach users about digital safety and resilience.

Taking Action Together
To make the internet safer for children, everyone needs to take action:

  • Governments: Create and enforce laws that protect young users online.
  • Tech Companies: Develop better privacy settings, enforce stricter age checks, and provide safety training.
  • Law Enforcement: Ensure there are strict consequences for online abuse.
  • Support Services: Offer psychosocial support and hotlines for children.
  • Schools: Teach digital safety as part of the curriculum.
  • Families: Stay informed about online safety and support children.
