Siem Reap – Today, 16 June 2016, an Indian national Raj Deo, 46, a clothes seller living in Siem Reap province, was convicted of “Indecent Assault by Article 246 of the Criminal Code of Kingdom of Cambodia” against one girl aged 14. Deo was sentenced by the Siem Reap Provincial Court to 14 months’ imprisonment and ordered to pay 3 million riel (approx. USD 750) compensation to one civil plaintiff.
In December 2015, Raj Deo was arrested by Siem Reap Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile protection police after receiving a complaint from the victim. APLE Cambodia assisted police to identify the suspect and provided social and legal support to the victim and her family.
The victim was satisfied with the verdict, but asked if her abuser could be deported from Cambodia after he finishes his sentence.
“I applaud the guilty verdict against Deo. However, I express my heartfelt disappointment that the court didn’t order his deportation. Without deportation, he would exploit an opportunity to be here to prey on Cambodian children. Deportation should be made mandatory," said Mr. Vando Khoem, program director at APLE Cambodia.
