For Immediate Release
Yesterday, a 49-year-old Cambodian national was arrested by the Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Police in Siem Reap on suspicion of sexually abusing underage boys. The arrest was a result of an investigation by the police and APLE, following the report from the local community, who found the suspect’s behavior suspicious.
The families of four boys who testified to having been abused filed complaints against the suspect. The minors, aged between 12 and 14, were provided with counseling and immediate support by APLE’s social workers during the investigation.
At the police station the suspect confessed to the abuse of young boys, blaming that he committed the offenses because of problems in his marriage. He is still in police custody, awaiting further questioning before the case is forwarded to court.
This year, only in APLE cases, 18 underage boys have been identified and rescued from sexual abuse; four men were arrested and charged.
Vando Khoem, Deputy Director of Field Operations at APLE, stated:
“This is a great example of how the local community is important to protect children. The modus operandi of child sex offenders has been changing, and it is crucial that everyone be brave to report suspicious activities, so that authorities can investigate or prevent abuse on time.”
